The following is a very brief overview of the multitude of bead styles available. Still being assembled, so more information to come.- Seed Beads:
- Also called Rocailles, these beads are the typical choice for beadwork and small accessories. They range in color and finish and in size from 8/0 to 24/0. The smaller the number, the larger the bead.
When doing a beadwork project it is advisable to purchase more than you think you need as exact shades vary from batch to batch, this is called a dye lot difference. You can always use the extra for repairs or small projects. Sometimes we receive beads which are slightly off size. In the manufacturing process this is unavoidable.
Czech Seed Beads: These seed beads are made in the Czech Republic. They come strung in hanks of 24 strings 10" long (2 strings = 1 loop at 20") and are available is size 10/0, 11/0, 12/0, 13/0 and 14/0. Approximate number of beads per hank is: 10/0 - 3000, 11/0 - 4000, 12/0 - 4500, 13/0 - 5000, 14/0 - 5500.
Rocailles: Transparent seed beads with a silver lining, have a meatallic luster and sheen.
Cuts: Faceted or cut to give a sparkle. Can be cut once or more, more cuts means more sparkle.
Luster: Have a pearl-like finish
- White Hearts:
Colored beads, typically red, blue, green and yellow, with a white lining
- French Pony Stripes:
Opaque beads with stripes of color on each bead
- French Seed Beads:
Larger holes than Czech
- Japanese Seed Beads:
Less consistent size and shape than Czech
- Trade/Collector Beads:
- These beads are typically more decorative and larger in size. They come in a range of designs and shapes. Antique trade beads are usually collected because of their high value. Reproduction, or fancies, are more economical to use in an accessory.
White Hearts: Hudson Bay or Cornaline D’Allepo, these are colored glass with white lining
French Pony Stripes: Opaque beads with stripes of color on each bead
Hubbell Beads: Often made from stone, for example, Turquoise
Chevrons: A distinct design consisting of red and white triangles formed the each end of a blue bead
- Assesory/Decorative Beads:
Fire Polish Beads: Available in glass or plastic, these beads are faceted and very sparkly. Typically used for Southern style breastplates, chokers, purse dangles, or necklaces. Can have an aurora borealis (AB) finish which gives a rainbow effect. Also available as machine cut crystal in Swarovski or similar crystal. This gives sharper edges and more sparkle.
French Tube Beads: Similar in shape to Wampum, longer tube shape
Druks: Perfectly round glass beads
Crow Beads: Typically used for Northern style breastplates, chokers, purse dangles, or necklaces. Available in plastic or glass. Czech Crow beads are more consistent in shape and size than India or French.
Pony Beads: Like a large seed bead. Most often available in 5/0 and 8/0 sizes.
